I was once in a gym when I overheard a member ask one of the coaching team about buying supplements.

“Oh, just buy whatever online, all of them are the same.”

The bewildered member wandered off, looking…well…bewildered.

There was a shelf, fully stocked with products right behind him.

I was with the gym owner; he rolled his eyes.

When I asked if he’d spoken with his team, he shocked me with his reply.

He hadn’t.

He’d assumed his team members would guide members to the products stocked in the gym.

He assumed wrong.

If you have a team, they should be as informed and engaged as you are and they should be on board by suggesting the products and services that you offer.

Your front line staff, whether they’re selling directly or not, spend a great deal of time with your customers and they often have a very trusting relationship with them.

In the example above, the gym staff are with the members regularly: running courses, coaching classes, and answering questions.

Those members listen to and trust the staff and coaches, so they are a vital piece of the puzzle when it comes to sales.

I spent some time with the gym owner to find the best ways to engage with the staff to improve sales, not only of supplements but other products and services in the gym too.

The focus should always be on offering members the best possible service, and that’s what they are now doing.

There’s no ‘hard sell’.

The gym team use their knowledge, experience and understanding to offer members the right advice and, as a result, often have a product or service to offer.

Sales have improved across the board, particularly for supplements and other accessories which has improved the turnover of this revenue stream by almost EIGHT TIMES what it was previously.
